Nothing Needs to be Said About This:

Jay won Around the Horn on Friday (which of course does not involve "winning" in the traditional sense, but work with me here; I guess you could say Tony Reali thought he was the least stupid member of the panel that day). Here's how he led off his subsequent "face time:"

A few months ago it would have been unthinkable to say that Alex Rodriguez would one day make the Hall of Fame.

So, like the title says, nothing needs to be said about that. But I think I'll post a funny picture of Jay anyways.

  1. Good to know. Having 500 home runs now disqualifies one from entrance into Cooperstown.

That is, until you win a World Series. Thankfully this means that Robinson Cano is now guaranteed a spot in the hall of fame.

  2. For once, I'm on Mariotti's side on this. While it's certainly an exaggeration, there were countless mainstream media members (many of them Hall voters) who openly questioned A-Rod's legitimacy as a Hall of Fame candidate once his PED use came to light. It was definitely not "unthinkable" as Jay says, but it seems to me that most people have conveniently forgiven A-Rod for being a scumbag, narcissist, and cheat in the wake of his "clutch" performance in winning a World Series with the Yankees.

Fuck, I hate him even more than Mariotti and Simmons combined.

  3. Look, it goes like this. From about 2004 to 2008, everyone with a brain (even those who are obsessed with "winners" and "True Yankees" and the like) said A-Rod was a lock for the HOF, barring injury. Then, after the steroid admission, there was a chunk who said that he might not go in one day. And yes, while it's lame that all seems to be forgiven because of this postseason's results, those people are now pretty much back in the HOF camp. So in conclusion: "unthinkable" could not be a more wrong word to use here. "Mildly in doubt" or something similar would still be incorrect, but a lot less stupid.

  4. "Unthinkable" seems like a bit of a stretch. Yes, there was some knee-jerk reaction from some writers who said they wouldn't vote for him, but I think most baseball fans take a more measured approach to PEDs. Like, at some point we're all either going to have to not put anyone in the Hall, or say "everyone was doing them, let's evaluate cheating players in relation to the other cheating players they competed against."
You either have to say NO to Clemens, Bonds, Manny, A-Rod, etc. or you have to say that these guys dominated a sport when other players also used and did not dominate. Maybe all of these choices are distasteful, but the choice will have to be made.
Oh yeah, Mariotti is a moron.

  5. Yeah--it's pretty clear that the issue is the word "unthinkable" not the concept that A-Rod's HOF credentials were in doubt.

It is weird that everyone flip flopped so quickly. Me, I never threw a cunt-out sissy-fit over A-Rod's steroid revelations or alleged choking, so it wasn't too hard for me to "get back on his side". Reporters on the other hand? whatever...

  6. Heh. Cunt-out sisy fit.

  7. Oh, and just to let you know, you are correct: the only reason we make fun of Mariotti is because we're jealous. (We're all struggling journalism school students with no jobs.)
