dan-bob Leaves His Brain Behind

This is an edit to take down a foolish post of mine where I criticized a claim by SI.com's Joe Posanski about Rickey Henderson. In fact, I had misread the point Mr. Posnanski made - which had to do with Rickey's astounding number of leading-off-an-inning-walks. I apologize to Mr. Posnanski, and recognize that I, not he, am the idiot in question.

In its stead:

  1. I still think that's a pretty damn good stat. Sure he may have gotten at least one leadoff plate appearance per game, but the others got probably at least 3 plate appearances a game (assuming they weren't replaced by someone off the bench). To have less TOTAL walks than someone's LEAD-OFF walks is pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

  2. Add to that getting on base w/ 0 outs, plus his ability to steal bases, and, yes, that stat does become something staggering. Idk, I think I'm with Posanski on this one.

  3. You are misunderstanding the stat. He's not comparing "Rickey walking when leading off an inning" to "Jim Rice walking when leading off an inning".

He's comparing "Rickey walking when leading off an inning" to "ALL of Jim Rice's walks". Ernie Banks had 763 walks in his entire career, which is fewer than Rickey had just leading off innings.

  4. Agree with Monty - POSNANSKI clearly means that Henderson walked more leading off an inning that the rest of the players in the list ever walked in their whole career (whether they were leading off or not).

If you are going to go after someone's writing, at least make sure that you can read first. And spell his name right.

  5. I love Joe Posnanski significantly more than I love Dan-Bob. (JUST KIDDING DAN BOB!)

I'm not sure why you're so annoyed by this stat or Posnanski's interpretation of it.
