hatguy writes another column with no analysis

the sun also continues to rise in the east and set in the west. here are the highlights from mike celizic's latest masterpiece on msnbc.com, "It's time to give the Spurs some credit." despite the fact that he's about two weeks behind the rest of the media in writing this column, i have to admit, the concept expressed within is not as terribly formulated as you might expect. yup, the spurs are great, they've been under-ratedly great for almost a decade now, and the NBA's western conference is significantly more talented than the east. all this is fair game for a column. it's just the quality of the writing itself and the support used for arguments that are god-effing-awful.

If the Spurs win, which is like saying if Rush makes fun of Hillary, it will be four titles for San Antonio since 1999.

how topical and creative. he also could have gone with "which is like saying if paris hilton runs afoul of the law", but i like this better. really brings the point to the reader in terms they can understand!

...what the Spurs have done is even more difficult. They keep coming back and winning again even as the rest of the league keeps trying to stop them.

every team in every playoffs of every sport is trying to stop every team opposing them. the spurs' run over the course of the last decade has been pretty awesome and has lasted longer than most could have predicted. but they're not getting any more focus from their opponents than any other team. it's not like the cavaliers beat the pistons and then said to themselves, "ok guys, now we really have to start playing hard."

The Mavs, though fatally flawed in the toughness department,

also notable in their loss to the warriors this year were their flaws in the "coaching" and "bench scoring" departments.

Last year’s Heat victory over Dallas can be explained — the Mavs misplaced their heart on the way to the Finals.

that must've been it. not dwyane wade getting every call ever while going for 35 a game and being unstoppable down the stretch. with three of their four losses in the series coming by 3, 1 (game 5) and 3 (the deciding game 6) points, i think it's clear the real problem was the mavericks' heart(s).

These things run in cycles, and the East is sure to rise again — some day.

The Cavs will continue to improve and the Bulls have a promising young team.

outstanding analysis. i know celizic isn't paid to grind and crunch numbers all day, but come on... how long did it take him to come up with this? what about the raptors? what about the magic? anything?

The trouble with the Spurs is that they are too damned good. They don’t need flash or highlight reel moves to beat you. They just have players with great fundamentals who play the game the way it’s supposed to be played.

tony parker, minus the fact that he doesn't dunk, is one of the flashiest players in the league. it's insane how often he gets into the paint and scores over centers and power forwards. manu ginobili routinely makes jaw dropping plays. even duncan, stereotypically thought of as boring, has been known to posterize an opposing player from time to time. the spurs get this reputation hatguy speaks of because they don't score a lot of point and because their personalities are boring, not because their ability to play basketball is.

Right now, they’re like the Yankees were in the late 1990s,

obligatory yankees reference.

thanks hatguy! next time please write something worse, that i can criticize in whole rather than in part. thanks.

  1. Wow, I had no clue Celizic wrote about the NBA as well.

Oh well, either way, I was still sure he never analyzed the NBA....oooooohhhhhhh BURN! ::pnoles's self-esteem jumps 5 points::

And that is hilarious that he writes about a different sport and it still comes back to the Yankees
