It's difficult to single out how important a given player is to the success of a team without watching reams of film. Baseball, with its pitcher-batter matchups and limited number of outcomes gives us stats to pore over. It's also not a coincidence advanced statistics have trouble gauging defense, as it's the one aspect of baseball that is somewhat similar to the other sports.Biggus Rickusnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6300012139741038635.post-4402612601776119742011-06-29T12:57:22.741-07:002011-06-29T12:57:22.741-07:00Adam, every MLB GM started out a little different ...Adam, every MLB GM started out a little different than regular ol' somebodies like you and me. We watched the games as kids, they sat there counting the scoreboard changes.

And that's why no front offices care about anything except sabermetrics. The horsepower is more like the people that use meaningless counting stats (He had 100 RBI so he must be really good). Sabermetrics would be more akin to something like wanting to buy that expensive BMW but then researching that the Nissan's VORC (Value over Replacement Car) is nearly the same but the price is considerably less.

2. The whole argument by this guy is pointless because we all know that even the advanced metrics used now for other sports aren't even close to as valuable or accurate as they are in baseball.

3. It seems to me that Phillip Roth gave that example to say that the kid was given an incomplete and unrealistic interpretation of baseball. Now that is being used as a real life example to compare to how actual professional baseball teams make decisions?Adamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05117565553215414852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6300012139741038635.post-11897756745608477712011-06-29T05:25:43.871-07:002011-06-29T05:25:43.871-07:00Nicely done, pnoles.
