I think baseball should just put the top 8 teams in the league into the playoffs and always put the Red Sox and the Yankees on the opposite side of the draw.

Now that would get high television ratings. Just like that Subway Series did a few years ago. Aren't we all supposed to disagree all the time like on Around the Horn?

I think the NL and the NFC are both not as bad divisions as people make them out to be. It may have something to do with the fact my favorite teams are in both divisions but still.

I actually do not think the Angels are a World Series contender. I don't have any respect for them and think they are in a weak division, so they benefit from that. I have no data to back this up at all, but I would consider them a second tier team despite their record. I can think of 6 teams in the National League I believe are better than the Angels. I would agree that MLB in general is a lot more even overall this year.

I would say that really there are no teams that stand out above the rest in either league. I mean, yeah, the NL only has two teams I think are World Series worthy and the AL has four, I'd guess, but all that means is that the AL happens to have more. Overall, the Cubs and Phillies (sans Myers ) I think are every bit as good as the Red Sox or the Angels.

So yeah, in other words, I'd say you're right.Chris Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12152452626681072765noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6300012139741038635.post-45860288339190717732008-06-30T11:53:00.000-07:002008-06-30T11:53:00.000-07:00Nice cherry picking from Jemele: the past 3 out of...Nice cherry picking from Jemele: the past 3 out of 5 NBA champs were from the East

As I commented on her piece of trash column: it's also 3 championships since MJ retired for the East.

she's definitely a level below scoop jackson now. maybe even on skip-bayless levelAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6300012139741038635.post-67519806839577926892008-06-30T11:43:00.000-07:002008-06-30T11:43:00.000-07:00Chris, can you throw in the Panthers as a team tha...Chris, can you throw in the Panthers as a team that could be good this year in the NFC? Please, it would actually give me some sense of hope.

I am not as convinced about the NL being so much worse than the AL this year. Yeah, they may have good teams but if you put the Angels or the White Sox in the NL West or Central I am not sure they are winning a division. Maybe I am wrong, but I would certainly not mind if my favorite team was placed in the AL West and let the Angels deal with the fucking Marlins every year. They are not good, just annoying.Bengoodfellahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09401971573776672570noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6300012139741038635.post-66883065865560583332008-06-30T11:23:00.000-07:002008-06-30T11:23:00.000-07:00This was completely outstanding.Favorite line: "Th...This was completely outstanding.

Favorite line: "This is a direct contradiction to pretty much everything you've written so far."

Couldn't believe she included that "Eastern teams make it obvious" line.Derpsaucehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08881690667013390019noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6300012139741038635.post-12705795922559653562008-06-30T10:54:00.000-07:002008-06-30T10:54:00.000-07:00ps: "They've been softer than John Daly's commitme...ps: "They've been softer than John Daly's commitment to on-the-course sobriety" would have been a much better ZINGERChris Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12152452626681072765noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6300012139741038635.post-73200312668770969982008-06-30T10:51:00.000-07:002008-06-30T10:51:00.000-07:00To be fair, though, Lar, of all the "supposedly un...To be fair, though, Lar, of all the "supposedly unfairly dominant conferences", the Western Conference is probably the most overrated.

What do I mean by that? Well, I guess what I'm saying is this.

Everyone agrees the AFC is light years beyond the NFC. You look at it rationally, and over the past 3-5 years, the AFC has had some consistently excellent teams: The Pats, the Chargers, the Colts, the Steelers, and depending on the year, the Jaguars and the Broncos. That's pretty impressive.

Now, I've argued that the top NFC teams might be mentioned in that category, but year in and year out there's like ONE or TWO top NFC teams, and if you threw them into that list, they'd probably rank towards the bottom if not THE bottom.

For instance, this year, we'll have the Colts, Jags, Steelers, Pats, and Chargers as teams that we can be fairly certain will be extremely dominant. Meanwhile, in the NFC what do we have? The Cowboys, sure. And maybe the Vikings or the G'ain'ts. Put them in that AFC pantheon and where dot hey rank? Probably somwhere alongside the Jags and Steelers. And that's if you don't think the Jags have become a top flight team with an excellent offseason.

Obviously the NFC team won the Super Bowl last year, but taht's, like you said, a small sample size. If the playoffs were a free for all, most people agree that the two teams to make the Super Bowl would be AFC teams, since there's just so many of them and they're patently better.

Same thing with baseball. The AL is plain better. Yeah the NL will have one or two teams each year capable of beating the best AL teams (see Cardinals over Detroit somehow) but mostly you get solid teams from the NL playing great teams from the AL in the world series, because each AL playoffs has 4 great teams in it and each NL playoffs has 1-2 great teams in it.

College football? Yeah, I know you hate the SEC, but when the SEC is unbalanced, it's unbalanced. There will be 4-5 top 10-caliber teams coming out of it each year, and the Big 10, Big East, Big XII, and Pac-10 will generally have around 2 each. That's imbalance.

Meanwhile the Western Conference gets talked up, and to a certain extent rightfully so. After all, you did point out the disparity in interconference play. But among the top eight teams, especially this year, there wasn't that much disparity.

The Hawks were a joke, yeah, but on any given day, the Cavs, Pistons, Celtics, Wizards and Magic might have given the Rockets, Jazz, Lakers, Hornets, and Spurs a run for their money. At the very least if, like with the NFL, we had a free for all and threw all those teams into a pressure cooker, it's a lot more likely that an eastern conference team might emerge than in the NFL or MLB.

Like for instance, take the Spurs. If you put them in the Eastern Conference, they MIGHT have won it...but it's far from a slam dunk. But if you put the Colts in the NFC playoffs, it'd be a lot more likely they get through. And that's WITH the added pressure of the one and done. More closely comparitively, you could look at an also-ran from the 2007 AL playoffs. Is there any doubt that Cleveland or Oakland would have run through the NL playoffs? No offense, Larry, but there's little doubt in my mind.

That said, Jemele Hill's argument for the W. Conf. being overrated because this championship proves it is just plain stupid.Chris Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12152452626681072765noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6300012139741038635.post-8461042178742381292008-06-30T07:09:00.000-07:002008-06-30T07:09:00.000-07:00Sorry I didn't mean to say "through" - i meant to ...Sorry I didn't mean to say "through" - i meant to say "throo".Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01551752632881830012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6300012139741038635.post-40568197701512527602008-06-30T07:05:00.000-07:002008-06-30T07:05:00.000-07:00If you go to Jemele Hill's blog you can give her a...If you go to Jemele Hill's blog you can give her a suggestion for her Fantasy Football team.
